The T-6 was designed to be used for teaching future fighter pilots the aerobatics that are necessary for combat. The T-6 is the largest aircraft except for some fighter type aircraft that is generally used for aerobatics in airshows. It weighs over 2 _ tons and has a 4 foot longer wing span than a P-51. It is not used for extended negative G or tumbling maneuvers such as those performed in small aerobatic aircraft. Due to the size and weight of the T-6, the most enjoyable maneuvers in the T-6 involve graceful positive G aerobatics such as loops, rolls of many types, the Cuban eight, cloverleaf and the split “S”. I enjoy these graceful aerobatics, but also realize that aerobatics are not necessary for an unforgettable T-6 ride. Experiencing the aerodynamic feel of a plane of the size and weight of a T-6 is enjoyable and unforgettable without doing aerobatics. However, if you are interested in experiencing aerobatics in a WWII aircraft I want to make sure that the overall flight experience is enjoyable from start to finish. For this reason, I start with simple positive G rolls and then go on to the maneuvers that are more complicated and involve higher G loading. By discussing the maneuvers and the sensations before we experience them it is possible to make them more enjoyable and unforgettable for the right reasons. |
